A sofa can have all the essentials and still feel a little unfinished. The cushions are in place, the coffee table is doing its job, but something is missing.
A woven throw is an easy way to bring color, pattern and texture into that space. It also gives you something to reach for when you settle in with a book or stretch out after a long day.
You don’t need a perfectly styled room to make it work. Start with a blanket you enjoy looking at, then try one of these three simple arrangements.
1. Drape it over the arm for an easy, relaxed look
This is a good everyday option, especially if you like to keep most of the seating clear.
Fold the throw loosely lengthwise and lay it over one sofa arm. Let part of it fall toward the outside and the rest rest on the seat. Adjust the fold until a section of the pattern shows, then let the fringe hang naturally.
Keep the bottom edge clear of the floor. You want it within reach without collecting dust or getting underfoot.
For a little balance, place a cushion near the throw in a color picked from its design. Green foliage might suggest an olive cushion; warm golden details could work with ochre or cream. The colors don’t have to match exactly.
2. Fold it across the back for a tidier finish
If you prefer clean lines, fold your throw into a broad rectangle and place it over part of the sofa back.
This arrangement lets the pattern become a backdrop to your cushions. It works particularly well when you want to show a border or a recognizable section of artwork without covering the seat.
Rather than making a narrow strip, leave enough fabric visible for the design to read. A bird, flower or sun motif can become a small focal point.
On a sofa positioned away from the wall, check the view from behind too. A neatly arranged throw can make the back of the sofa feel considered as part of the room.
3. Layer it over a corner for a cozy reading spot
For a softer arrangement, open the throw over one corner of the sofa so it covers part of the back and seat.
Allow a few natural folds, with the fringe visible along an edge. Add one comfortable cushion and leave space to sit down. This should feel like a place you can use, rather than a display you’re afraid to disturb.
A larger area of exposed fabric gives an expressive design more room. If the blanket is the boldest pattern in the room, keep nearby cushions simple so the artwork has some breathing space.
Choose colors that already belong in your room
Look around before adding anything new. Your room may already have a useful palette in its wood furniture, rug, artwork or plants.
A cream sofa gives many patterns room to stand out. On a dark sofa, lighter areas of a design can create contrast. With a patterned sofa, try repeating one color and choosing a throw whose pattern feels different in scale.
A useful starting point is one patterned throw and one or two solid cushions. You can build from there if the room needs more.
Check the size before you style
A throw’s dimensions affect how much of the sofa it will cover. Fold a sheet or another blanket to the listed size and try your intended arrangement before ordering.
Our Heron Marsh Sunset Woven Blanket measures 60 × 50 inches. Think of it as a decorative throw you can fold or drape, and check its dimensions against your own sofa.
Let it become part of everyday life
The best arrangement is the one that suits how you use the room. If you reach for your blanket every evening, an easy drape may work better than a careful fold.
