A woven blanket doesn’t have to spend all its time on the sofa. Its pattern, border and fringe can also make a beautiful focal point on a wall.
Textile artwork brings a different surface into a room: softer edges, visible threads and a design that changes slightly with the light. The key is to plan both the look and the support before hanging it.
Here’s how to approach a woven blanket wall display, from choosing the space to looking after the fabric.
Start with the wall, not the hardware
Look for a space where the blanket can be seen as a whole. Above a console, along a hallway or on a quiet living-room wall, a textile can give an otherwise simple area some character.
Consider what sits beneath it. A wide console can help anchor a broad design, while a narrow wall may call for a smaller textile. Leave room around the edges and fringe so the blanket doesn’t feel squeezed between furniture or doorframes.
Choose a location out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, splashes and damp conditions. A decorative display should suit the fabric as well as the room.
Measure the design in its intended orientation
Check the actual blanket dimensions and which way the artwork faces. Rotating a throw to fit a wall may also turn its birds, flowers or other motifs sideways.
Our Heron Marsh Sunset Woven Blanket measures 60 × 50 inches. Before planning a display, measure your own blanket, including the fringe, and allow extra space for its mounting system.
Mark the proposed outline using paper templates or small pieces of removable tape that are suitable for your wall finish. Step back and check the proportions from the doorway and your usual seat.
Give the fabric even support
The most important part of hanging a textile is spreading its weight. A few small attachment points can concentrate tension and cause the fabric to distort.
Avoid pushing nails or staples through the blanket, and don’t hang it by its fringe. Choose a mounting system suited to its size, weight and condition.
Two approaches to discuss with a textile specialist are a fitted fabric sleeve with a supporting rod, or a properly constructed hook-and-loop mounting system. These require suitable materials and careful attachment to the textile. Simply sticking adhesive strips onto the blanket is a different approach and can damage it.
The Canadian Conservation Institute describes a hook-and-loop system that uses a sewn fabric backing to distribute support across the upper edge. Its guidance is a useful reference when planning a substantial textile display. Read the textile mounting guidance.
Match the fixings to your wall
The textile support and the wall fixings are separate decisions. A well-supported blanket still needs hardware appropriate to the mounting system and wall construction.
Check the total weight, including the rod or backing, and follow the hardware manufacturer’s instructions. Drywall, masonry and timber may need different fixings.
If you’re unsure about the wall or the textile attachment, ask a qualified installer or textile specialist. Their advice can help you avoid guessing at a mounting method.
Let the artwork lead the styling
Once the blanket is in place, keep the surrounding area simple at first.
A wood console, a ceramic bowl and one small arrangement of foliage may be enough. Pull an accent color from the blanket into a cushion or nearby object, rather than repeating the whole pattern.
For a detailed design, try leaving the rest of that wall clear. The border and fringe already give the textile a visual frame.
Check the display occasionally
Look for slipping, sagging, stretched areas or pressure marks. If the shape changes, take the textile down and review the support rather than pulling it back into position.
Follow the blanket’s own care instructions when cleaning. Our Care Guide covers the current woven cotton throw; a display mount may need to be removed before washing.
A wall hanging can be a lovely way to enjoy a design every day. Start with a pattern you love, give it enough space and support, and let the texture become part of your room.
